Service is the collection's prevailing ethic here. Tolstoy names it plainly as vocation — every man and woman is called to serve other people — and Mother Teresa operationalizes it: small things with great love, beginning in the home. King's urgent question — what are you doing for others? — is the most direct. Murray and Calvin frame it theologically: ownership is stewardship, and property is evaluated by use. The anonymous proverb about no one being too rich to not need help and no one too poor to not give positions service as structural and universal, not charitable and contingent. Rousseau's test — what good is possessing the universe if you're its only survivor — makes humanity a prerequisite for any value at all: nothing matters in isolation. What the collection resists is the grand gesture. Mother Teresa's instruction to begin at home, King's persistence, Tolstoy's vocation language — all locate humanity's obligations in specific relationships and specific moments rather than in broad declarations. The largest humanitarianism is made of the smallest transactions.
No effort will be considered too high a price to ensure the triumph of a nobler humanity.
