Alphonse de Lamartine was a French poet, novelist, and statesman whose lyrical verse helped define French Romanticism in its earliest phase. Born in 1790 in Mâcon, Burgundy, he was educated by the Jesuits and read widely in classical and Italian literature before publishing his first collection, Méditations poétiques, in 1820. The collection was an immediate success, recognized for its personal voice, musical language, and sincere engagement with loss, love, and faith. His poems Le Lac and L'Automne became among the most beloved in the French language. Lamartine was also a politician of consequence: he served in the Chamber of Deputies and played a significant role in the revolution of 1848, helping to establish the Second Republic. His political career ended in disappointment and financial ruin, and his later years were spent writing prolifically to pay debts. He died in 1869, his literary reputation secure if his fortunes were not.
