Napoleon Bonaparte was the Corsican-born general who became Emperor of France and, between 1804 and 1814, conquered most of continental Europe before overreaching in Russia and Spain and losing everything. Born in Ajaccio in 1769, he rose through the Revolutionary army on the strength of his artillery tactics, his physical courage, and his extraordinary capacity for logistics and decision. His legal achievement — the Napoleonic Code — reshaped the law of France and much of Europe and persists today. His aphorisms have the brevity of a man who had no time for anything unnecessary: never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake; imagination governs the world; from the sublime to the ridiculous there is only one step. He died in exile on Saint Helena in 1821, fifty-one years old, still dictating to his memoirs.
