Lucius Annaeus Seneca was the Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist, and statesman who served as tutor and then advisor to the Emperor Nero, accumulated enormous wealth, and was eventually ordered to commit suicide for his alleged role in a conspiracy. Born around 4 BC in Córdoba, Spain, he came to Rome, trained as a rhetorician and philosopher, and after surviving exile under Claudius rose to the height of imperial influence. His Letters to Lucilius, his essays on anger, providence, and the brevity of life, and his tragedies are the most readable documents of Roman Stoicism available. His aphorisms carry the weight of someone who had thought about death long before it came for him: sometimes even to live is an act of courage; the bravest sight in the world is a great man struggling against adversity; if you wish to be loved, love.
