Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) was an American humorist, journalist, and creator of the fictional Irish-American bartender Mr. Dooley. Through newspaper columns written in dialect, Dunne commented on politics, war, marriage, class, journalism, reform, and public hypocrisy. His major collections include Mr. Dooley in Peace and in War, Mr. Dooley's Philosophy, and Mr. Dooley's Opinions. Dunne mattered because he turned popular newspaper humor into sharp social commentary, making a neighborhood voice speak about national and international affairs. His satire could be warm, skeptical, and cutting at once. Some of the dialect conventions now feel dated, but the political intelligence remains vivid. His quotes endure because they puncture respectability, especially around marriage, diet, public virtue, and the comic gap between what people claim and what they do. His satire still gives public affairs a neighborhood voice and comic bite.
